Stay on top of your cloud costs

with FinOps from Senacor

You have taken the step into the public cloud – but the expected efficiency gains have not materialized?
FinOps maximizes the business value of your cloud investments, promotes data-based decisions and creates financial accountability with a clear cost-benefit assessment per application or service.

Why FinOps?

In our experience, over 25 per cent of cloud expenditures at large companies are attributable to unnecessary costs. FinOps finally ends non-transparent expenditures. Senacor’s audit and process model helps you get the most out of your cloud investment.

Frequent challenges:

  • Cost opacity: No clear breakdown of spending by application or service

  • Cost anomalies: Unexpectedly high operating costs after lift-and-shift

  • Lack of accountability: Design decisions without consideration of operational costs

  • Weak forecasting capability: No valid prediction of future cloud costs

  • Unclear benefits: No transparency about business value per euro invested

Reducing cloud costs for existing solutions

PROBLEM:
Our customer operates an application in the AWS Cloud. The cloud-native application uses modern technologies such as Kubernetes and managed services such as Amazon S3, DynamoDB and OpenSearch. However, the monthly operating costs are considerable and amount to several thousand euros. Cloud costs should be significantly reduced without compromising on performance or availability.

OUR SOLUTION:

The first step was to create cost transparency by introducing a standardized tagging concept and allocating costs according to their source. Building on this, we analyzed the existing cost structures, identified hotspots and allocated the cloud services used to the building blocks of the existing solution architecture.
Refactoring approaches were then developed and evaluated with a focus on rightsizing, use of cloud services and availability. By implementing the optimization approaches, it was possible to reduce cloud costs by over 50% in production and by more than 70% in the test systems within a short space of time.

Introduction of automated cloud cost reporting

PROBLEM:
Our customer operates an internal platform that provides services for the operation of continuous integration pipelines and test environments in the AWS Cloud. Although the platform generates high costs, user acceptance of cost optimization is low. In addition, the development teams have no direct insight into the costs they incur – a cost report is created monthly with a great deal of manual effort.

OUR SOLUTION:

Development of a solution for the automated and timely provision of cost reports for all development teams. The first step was to identify relevant cost blocks, including cloud services, license costs and internal billing costs. The corresponding raw cost and usage data is compiled in a data staging area using automatic imports and manual uploads, and relevant key figures are pre-calculated. Defined KPIs on services used and costs are visualized for all developers in various dashboards.

Automated cloud cost forecasting

PROBLEM:
Our customer is facing the challenge of continuously rising cloud costs. In addition, a reliable forecast of future costs is not possible, as neither established product teams nor new projects can provide a valid statement about the expected future costs.

OUR SOLUTION:

In an initial solution module, a company-wide technology guideline was developed and rolled out to create standardized guidelines for the use of cloud services and technologies. On this basis, an architectural design focusing on cost efficiency was evaluated and implemented. At the same time, various tools and methods for automatically calculating the expected operating costs of applications were analyzed. Building on this, a tool-supported cloud cost forecast was integrated into existing continuous integration processes.
